Holmshornet with skis in a backpack – May 2018

I have long had my eye on this exciting peak, Holmshornet, and it has been high on my wish list. I grew up by the fjord directly below, and many times in my childhood we were at Sæbønestua and looked back at the rugged peaks that lay behind us; Short, steep mountains, and wild peaks that looked impregnable. And Holmshornet at the far end, shaped like a point above the Hjørundfjord.

But until now, it had remained a dream.

It had to be a nice day, with dry conditions in the mountains, because the slopes get very slippery when wet. The reports were great, and we were planning to take a trip to check the conditions..

On the way up the Skondalen through the Skodda with skis in a backpack

I woke up to thick fog, but a quick look at Yr.no and the webcam at Eitrefjell made me realize that this was going to be a beautiful day. Perfect for some tinder-wrangling 😀

The snow was still a bit further down in the Skondalen valley. We filled up our bags with climbing equipment and put our skis on our backpacks. We couldn't pass up the opportunity for some spring slush when we were going up to the Skondalen valley anyway.

We hadn't gotten far up through Skondalen before we were over the sea of fog. These are the most beautiful hikes, I think; When I wake up down by the fjord to thick fog, but know that just a few hundred meters above me there is sun and blue sky. Then I'm not late out of bed 😀

The skis are still in the backpack, but after about 500 meters of elevation gain we can strap them on.

..That's right! Good luck on your skis!

The skis are parked in the crevasse where we usually turn left towards Dalegubben. Today, however, we were going to the right, and up to the ridge of peaks that none of us had ever been to before. There is a lot of snow on the back and along the ridge at the top. It was firm and nice, and very helpful when we were traversing through the ridge.

This one went straight into the top 10! We have to go back here to stay the night!
