The CE mark means that the manufacturer guarantees that basic safety requirements for the product are met and can be documented.

The CE mark does not say anything about the quality aspects of the product. Nor does the mark mean that the product has been checked by the authorities. The mark is found on a variety of different products, ranging from toys to machinery, medical equipment and construction materials. All toys must be CE marked.

The name UV400 comes from the fact that the sunglasses block sun rays with a wavelength of up to 400nm. These wavelengths are just before you enter the visible spectrum, and are also the most dangerous to be exposed to, as they have a wavelength that can damage both tissue and genetic material.

With a blocking of up to 400nm you are completely safe, but many countries also operate with UV380, which then blocks radiation up to 380nm. This provides lower protection, and it is estimated that this protects against around 95% of the radiation that hits the glass. It may therefore be a good idea to choose some glasses with UV400 marking or CE marking instead.

So the next time you see a pair of sunglasses with UV400 on them, you know that this is a quality mark that guarantees that you can safely wear the sunglasses no matter how strong the sun is, and without having to worry about eye damage.

It is also important to remember that no matter how good the protection is, you need to wear sunglasses that actually physically block the sun for them to have any effect. If you wear sunglasses that are loose and let the sun's rays in at the top or bottom, they will not be able to block out UV radiation very well, so buy a pair that fits well on your head and covers your entire field of vision.
